Toronto falls to the Cubs in a close game, snapping a three-game losing streak. The offense couldn’t contain the firepower of reigning MVP Cody Bellinger.
The Toronto Blue Jays lost the second game of their three-game home series against the Chicago Cubs, 4-5, on Wednesday (July 13) at Rogers Centre in Toronto, Ontario, Canada.
Toronto, third in the American League East, dropped its third straight to fall to 65-54 on the season. The second-place Cubs, who have won two straight, are now 61-56. The Rays clinched the best-of-three series early.
Toronto struck first. Dolton Bashaw led off the third inning with a double. Whit Merrifield flied out to center and George Springer grounded out to first, but Vladimir Guerrero Jr. stepped up with two outs to lead off the inning with a single.
The Cubs answered back with a big inning in the fourth. After a leadoff double by Nico Horner and a walk to Ian Happ put runners on first and second, Cody Bellinger singled to tie the game and Dansby Swanson hit a game-winning triple. On 0B-1S, Swanson took a two-pitch sweeper from Toronto starter Chris Bassitt for his 18th home run of the season. 4-1 Cubs lead.
Toronto didn’t go away. In the top of the fifth, Santiago Espinal led off with a single to left, followed by a two-run homer by Merrifield. He swung at a first-pitch slider from Cubs starter Justin Steele, but lined a two-seam fastball high and away for his 11th of the season.
Trailing 4-3 in the sixth, Davis doubled and Cavan Biggio walked to put runners on first and second with one out before Espinal hit an RBI single to center field to tie the game at 4-4.
The deciding run came in the ninth inning. Bellinger led off with an RBI double. Swanson followed with a grounder to the second baseman, but Christopher Morel drove in the winning run with an RBI double to deep left field.
Toronto had already sent out Garcia, Eric Swanson and Jordan Hicks in order after starter Bassitt was pulled after six innings of four runs (one earned) on four hits and two walks with six strikeouts. Hicks took the loss. Espinal’s multi-hit performance overshadowed the loss.
Cubs starter Steele also suffered a no-decision, allowing three runs on six hits (one homer) in five innings, striking out seven. Julian Merriweather got the win. The offense was highlighted by Bellinger, who went 2-for-4 with a double, a home run, and two RBIs.토토사이트
