By Donghoon Kang = After the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia and New Zealand, the women’s soccer world rankings have changed dramatically. The United States, the world’s strongest team, dropped two spots, and Sweden, the Nordic powerhouse, took the top spot for the first time. Spain, the reigning champions, moved up to No. 2.
The Federation Internationale de Football Association (FIFA) released its updated women’s soccer world rankings on Friday. Sweden tops the rankings with 2069.17 points, followed by Spain (2051.84 points), the United States (2051.21 points), England (2030.14 points), and France (2004.17 points).
This is the first time in history that Sweden has been ranked No. 1 in women’s soccer. It was largely due to a strong showing at the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia-New Zealand, where they knocked out the United States in the round of 16 and then beat Japan and Australia in the quarterfinals and third- and fourth-place matches, respectively, to finish third.
The U.S., once considered the “best team in the world,” dropped to third place. It’s been about six years since June 2017. Second-placed Germany, the ‘Chariots of Fire’ (1987.67 points), also dropped four places to sixth. Spain, who made history by winning the Women’s World Cup in Australia-New Zealand in 2023, climbed four places to take second place. The Netherlands (1984.50 points) and Japan (1961.35 points) moved up to seventh and eighth, respectively, while Brazil (1949.41 points) and Canada (1944.84 points) are ninth and 10th.
The Republic of Korea (1773.93 points) dropped three spots from June to 20th place, its lowest ranking in nearly four years since December 2019. This is the aftermath of a lethargic performance in the group stage of the 2023 Women’s World Cup in Australia-New Zealand, where they were eliminated early with a 1-1 draw and two losses.
