“You’re in second place…” Why did you claim to be a bridesmaid? “Elegance” that shone despite the failure of the award… Oh Ji-hwan’s praise for “1st place”, “A really cool friend, I respect you.”

I could have been a bridesmaid, but I wasn’t. It was a Golden Globe ceremony where everyone’s dignity shone through. After receiving the Golden Glove, Korean Series MVP Oh Ji-hwan thanked and praised Kia’s Park Chan-ho for attending the ceremony despite not winning the award.

Oh held the Golden Glove in the shortstop category at the 2023 Shinhan Bank SOL KBO Golden Glove Awards held at COEX Auditorium in Seoul on Nov. 11. This is the second consecutive season that Oh has been honored with the Golden Glove after winning it last year.헤라카지노

The shortstop category was the most competitive at the Golden Globes. Eight shortstops competed for the award. The nominees included all of the top shortstops on their respective teams. LG’s Oh Ji-hwan, KT’s Kim Sang-soo, SSG’s Park Sung-sung, NC’s Kim Joo-won, KIA’s Park Chan-ho, Lotte’s Noh Jin-hyuk, Samsung’s Lee Jae-hyun, and Hanwha’s Lee Do-yoon were all vying for one golden glove.

The shortstop Golden Glove was a two-way battle between Oh Ji-hwan and Park Chan-ho. This season, Oh played in 126 games, batting .268 (113-for-422) with 24 doubles, three triples, eight home runs, 62 RBI, 65 runs scored, 16 stolen bases, 64 walks, 82 strikeouts, a .396 on-base percentage, a .371 slugging percentage, and a .767 OPS. In particular, Oh was named the MVP of the Korean Series for his performance as captain. In five games, he batted .316 (19-for-6) with three home runs, eight RBIs, six runs scored, and three walks to lead his team to victory. Most importantly, he became a hero by hitting a home run when it mattered most. In Game 2, he hit a game-winning solo shot off KT’s William Cuevas, in Game 3, he hit a dramatic come-from-behind three-run shot off Kim Jae-yoon in the top of the ninth inning when his team was down 5-7, and in Game 4, he hit another three-run shot off Joo Won in the seventh inning. Seven of his eight hits were home runs. Oh became the first player in history to hit home runs in three consecutive games in a single Korean Series.

Kia’s Park Chan-ho had a 2023 season that was no match for Oh individually. In 130 games this season, he batted .301 (136-for-452) with 18 doubles, four triples, 52 RBI, 73 runs scored, 30 stolen bases, 40 walks, 56 strikeouts, a .378 on-base percentage, a .356 slugging percentage, and a .734 OPS. Third in the KBO in stolen bases and 13th in batting average. A graduate of Sindapcho-Gundae University-Jangchung-go, Park was selected by the KIA Tigers in the fifth round, 50th overall, in the 2014 Second-Year Player Draft. He had a breakout year this season, posting his first career triple-digit batting average. However, he had to swallow his disappointment at the end of the regular season as the team failed to advance to the fall baseball season.

Oh and Chan-ho already shared the 2023 KBO Defensive Player of the Year award for the first time this year. Oh received 75 voting points and 12.5 defensive points, while Park Chan-ho (KIA) received 66.67 voting points and 20.83 defensive points. The total score of 87.5 points tied them as co-winners.

At the Golden Globe Awards, Oh had a narrow edge over Park Chan-ho. Oh received 154 of the 291 total votes cast, representing 52.9% of the vote. He was followed by runner-up Park Chan-ho with 120 votes (41.2%), with only 34 votes separating them. Kim Sang-soo (KT) came in third with five votes (1.7%), Kim Joo-won (NC) fourth with four votes (1.4%), Lee Jae-hyun (Samsung) fifth with three votes (1.0%), Park Sung-seong (SSG) and Noh Jin-hyuk (Lotte) tied for sixth with two votes (0.7%), and Lee Do-yoon (Hanwha) eighth with one vote (0.3%).

Oh Ji-hwan and Park Chan-ho both showed their class at the ceremony. “I’m here to show the dignity of second place,” Park Chan-ho told reporters before the ceremony, “Actually, it’s really nice just to be mentioned together. I’ve been mentioned with Oh Ji-hwan for almost months. I feel like I’m one step closer to being one of those players. I’m really enjoying it right now. I wanted to be mentioned alongside him all the time,” he said. “Honestly, you know I’m not going to get it,” he joked, before adding, “I don’t think I’m going to get it at all, and I’ve always wanted to watch the Golden Globes, because I’ve got to be an honoree at some point,” he said. Even if he didn’t win the award, he was happy to be there to honor the occasion.

After receiving the Golden Globe, Oh said, “I’m grateful to coach Yeom Kyung-yup for making 2023 the best year ever. I received help from many coaches, Cha Myung-seok, the front office, Kim Yong-il, and many others. As a player, I am very grateful. I had the best year ever. I’ve won a title in 29 years. Personally, it’s been 15 years since I won a title. I think this is the starting point. I want to help LG win a championship next year and build a dynasty. I want to thank my wife and my agent, and lastly, the LG Twins fans, the best fans in all 10 leagues. Thank you.”

Speaking to reporters after the ceremony, Oh said, “There is actually a reason why I wanted to receive this award. In order for 2023 to be remembered as the best year for me, I wanted to receive such a personal award, so I think I was greedy. Of course, I thought I was behind (Park) Chan-ho in the regular season, but I’m really grateful to Chan-ho for competing with me. I know that the shortstop position is a competition, and the Golden Glove is important, but I think it’s actually a reflection of the shortstop position, so I think it means more to me. I think it means more to me that I’m a mainstay on a team where younger guys are doing that, and I’m shining as a shortstop, so that’s a good feeling.”

Now, instead of being the challenger, Oh is the protector. When asked about the stiff challenges from his juniors, Oh said, “Actually, I should say that I was lucky to be on the same team as the competition. Now that the younger guys are coming up, I have to show them that I’m competitive too. I think the only way I can do that is to prove myself by preparing well so that I can win a prize and help the team win as well,” he said.

Along with winning the Korean Series, Oh has been traveling to a lot of events lately. “It’s great to be able to greet people like this. In my mind, I was already prepared. I decided to prepare for the 2024 season as soon as I won the overall title. I’m already taking time off to work out. It shouldn’t end with one season. It’s an ongoing process. It’s a professional thing to keep your word. I will slowly prepare step by step to win the overall title again next year.”

Regarding the small difference in votes between him and Park Chan-ho, Oh said, “I’m grateful for the attention. There was a lot of competition for the shortstop position, and it also means that there are many outstanding players. Park Chan-ho is coming back, I’m coming back, Park Sung-ho is coming back, Lee Jae-hyun is coming back, and Kim Hye-sung is coming back to the shortstop position. When you have players like that, it’s even more motivating for me,” he said.

In response to Park Chan-ho’s congratulations, he said, “I think he’s a really cool guy, and the fact that he has that kind of thinking, even though he’s younger (than me), I feel like I should learn from him. We’re baseball players, and I’m actually a junior, but I think I should really learn from him. “I think it’s cool,” he said, and added, “If I ever see him on the field, I want to ask him a lot of questions. He’s a three-hitter, so I’m going to ask him a lot of baseball questions.” He looked forward to seeing him again.
