The Mets, who fired manager Buck Showalter at the end of the 2023 season for poor performance, have named Carlos Mendoza, a former New York Yankees bench coach, as their new manager.
The Mets brought in Gibbons, a veteran manager, to assist Mendoza, who is a novice.
Gibbons was drafted by the Mets in the first round of the 1980 First-Year Player Draft, but only played 18 games in the majors.
However, Gibbons has gained a lot of experience as a coach since retiring. After serving as a minor league manager with the Mets, Gibbons managed the Toronto Blue Jays from 2004 to 2008 and 2013 to 2018. He also coached with the Kansas City Royals and San Diego Padres.
With Gibbons on the bench, Eric Chavez, who served as the Mets’ bench coach until this season, will move to hitting coach.
